| Using AltaVista to Search AltaVista allows you to search for web pages, data resources and multimedia files, such as Images, MP3s/Audios, and Videos. | Some AltaVista Web Search Tips: - When typing multiple words in the search box, AltaVista will search for web pages that contain all of the words. Eg. how to submit a web page - will look for all documents that contain any of the words used.
- To be more specific in searching for an exact phrase, use quotes eg. "how to submit a web page".
- When searching for documents that contain all of the specified words of phrases use AND, eg. submit AND web AND page.
- Using OR finds documents containing at least one of the specified words or phrases, eg. url submissions OR web submissions.
- To exclude any word or phrase use AND NOT, eg. url submissions AND NOT web design.
- To find documents containing both specified words or phrases within 10 words of each other use NEAR, eg. submit url NEAR express.
- Use the asterisk * as a wildcard. Submit* would find documents with submit, submission and promotion etc. You may also use the * in the middle of a word when unsure of the spelling, eg. HTML analy*er would find documents that contain both HTML analyzer and HTML analyser.
- You may use parentheses to group complex Boolean phrases. Eg. (url AND submit) AND (express OR standard) finds documents with the words url submit express or url submit standard or both.
- To find pages within a specified domain use domain:au to find pages from Australia.
- To find pages with a specific word or phrase in the URL itself use eg. url:submit to find all pages on all servers that have the word submit anywhere in the host name, path, or filename.
